Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on Mars? Well that opportunity is not as crazy as it once seemed. Mars One is a not for profit organization whose goal is to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2024 using the latest technology available from industry leaders. The program was officially announced in April 2013, and plans to begin a series of unmanned preparation missions to set a habitable settlement starting in 2018. These missions will be financed by crowd funding from the general public. Beginning in 2024, crews of four people will be sent on a one way mission to Mars, leaving every two years. Participants are required to go through a rigorous application process, including eight years of training to prepare them for life in close quarters with other crew members and isolated from the rest of the world. They will also need proper work experience and expertise, ability to make physical and electrical repairs, knowledge to grow crops in confined spaces, and the skill to deal with any medical issues.
The first crew will be sent up in 2024, and is expected to arrive in 2025. The trip lasts between seven and eight months. During the trip, astronauts will have to use wet wipes instead of showering, live on freeze-dried and canned food, and participate in a daily three-hour exercise routine. Once reaching Mars, the astronauts will be able to lead relatively normal lives. They will have plenty of living space, bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. They can wear regular clothes and prepare fresh food that they grew. All living spaces will be connected by passageways, and anyone wishing to leave the settlement will have to wear a Mars suit. The main jobs that the astronauts will be required to do are construction and scientific research. The will also submit routine reports on their experience with living on Mars. There will also be communication satellites that can transmit data from Earth to Mars and back. There will be many challenges associate with this mission, such as costs and safety, but if successful can establish the first permanent human settlement on another planet.

It really is amazing that a mission like Mars One is even being talked about today. We have come so far technologically, and the outer space frontier has become one of the most significant accomplishments. I absolutely love this idea. We must constantly be evolving as a human species in order to survive, and this is the next logical step. It is no secret that Earth is becoming overpopulated and that we will eventually run out of resources on our home planet. By establishing another planet as a human home, it opens up endless possibilities for the future. My dream would be to one day set foot on another planet. I can only imagine where we will be in another 50 years.
