Movie Review: Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

kick ass 2

Kick-Ass 2 is the sequel to the first movie that came out back in 2010. Kick-Ass, a regular high schooler turned superhero, is back in action and is looking for a team of other superheroes to team up with and fight crime. Meanwhile, Chris D’Amico, or Red Mist from the first movie, becomes a super villain and assembles his own team to seek revenge on Kick-Ass for killing his father.

What I liked

This movie did a good job in just trying to keep the plot simple and build off the storyline from the first movie. There were good action scenes and funny parts throughout this movie, and I liked Jim Carrey’s character as well. It was also interesting to see the identity crisis that Kick-Ass and Hit Girl went through. They wanted so badly to be superheroes even though each one’s father was strongly against it.

What I didn’t like

There were some overly cheesy parts in this movie, for example some of the names of the superheroes and supervillains. Even though the violence was so clearly fake and even funny at times, I still thought it was a little excessive at some points for a comedy superhero movie.

This movie currently has a 7.3/10 on IMDB, only a 29% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but a 72% from the audience>

Having seen the first Kick-Ass movie, my expectations were on par for this one. It was a good comedy action movie with a unique take on being a superhero movie. My final rating is a 3.5/5.
