Song Analysis: Yellow by Coldplay (2000)

Analysis

“Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah, they were all yellow”

This song is referencing a girl from the past that the singer loved. He was in love with everything that she did, and she was the bright star shining in his life.

“I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
And it was called Yellow.”

He wrote a song for her out of love to try to win her over. Yellow is once again referencing the stars.

“So then I took my turn,
Oh what the things have done,
And it was all yellow.”

For whatever reason, he had to wait for this girl. Perhaps it was because she was dating somebody else, or wasn’t ready to be in a relationship yet.

Chorus:

“Your skin,
Oh yeah your skin and bones,
Turn into
Something beautiful,
You know,
You know I love you so,
You know I love you so.”

The singer is declaring that her physical beauty transforms into beauty on the inside as well. He claims that she knows of his love for him.

I swam across,
I jumped across for you,
Oh what a thing to do.
‘Cause you were all yellow.
I drew a line,
I drew a line for you,
Oh what a thing to do,
And it was all yellow.

The singer is now expressing the great lengths he took to try to win this girl over, all because she was beautiful like the stars in the sky.

Chorus

“It’s true,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine for,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine.
Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And all the things that you do”

One possibility is that this girl passed away awhile ago, but the stars remind him of her presence. They shine bright as a reminder of how she once shone bright in his life.
