Abortion

abortion

Abortion has been a controversial issue for quite a long time, but it has made the news once again as a senator from Texas successfully filibustered a bill that would have made it virtually impossible to get an abortion. I don’t have an answer on whether abortion should or should not be legal, but I will present a logical thought process that will end up leaning heavily one way.

I need to first call out the people who say they are pro-choice. These people are often saying “women should have the right to do what they want with their own body.” This makes sense…in every other scenario except abortion. No matter where your starting point is for defining a living thing, the fact of the matter is that you are killing something that will eventually become life. How can you be pro-choice but not give that poor, innocent baby a choice as to whether or not it will live? I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t choose to die, that’s for sure. If you got pregnant by mistake, your own mistake should not cost a child its entire lifetime. That is simply not fair. There are always alternatives as to what to do with the baby if you don’t want to raise it yourself.

Now we need to address the special cases of rape, incest, or life of the mother. It seems like most people take it for granted that abortion should be allowed in these cases. I’m not so sure. When I look in the Bible I don’t see “Thou shalt not murder…..except for cases of rape, incest, or life of the mother.” At the end of the day, it is not the baby’s fault that any of those unfortunate circumstances happened. As a potential mother, you need to realize that you run the risk of possibly dying in childbirth. Who decided that one life was more important than another? If you had to decide, wouldn’t you at least go with the one that had a longer future in front of them?

One last thing I want to address is the people who say that men shouldn’t be making laws about abortion because they don’t understand what it is like for women. Should people who do drugs also be the only ones to make laws about drugs? Should murderers be the only ones to make rules about murder? You don’t have to be a woman to understand what’s involved in abortion and you certainly don’t have to be a woman to understand what murder is.

For me this boils down to the thought process of A) abortion is murder and B) a child that is innocent and has done no wrong deserves to live no matter what. You can call me a hardcore conservative or argue on some of these points, but I warn you that you will have to put together a pretty strong argument to convince me otherwise.
