A potentially historic discovery has been made, by none other than the nine-year old Mars Rover Opportunity. Opportunity discovered rock engrained with clay minerals, which is significant because it indicates that the rock had prolonged contact with water at some point. Many discoveries of evidence of water on Mars have been made before, but this one is different. In the past, the water had a very low pH, in other words it was acidic. In order for clay minerals to form, the water needs to have a neutral pH. This water would be drinkable, and more importantly have the potential to originate life. More analysis will be done, but this most recent discovery only adds credibility to the idea that Mars was much warmer and much wetter billions of years ago.
