Archaeologists say they have discovered what was thought to only exist in ancient Greek and Roman legends: The Gate to Hell. The site is located in southwestern Turkey and is said to closely resemble the description from the ancient myths. The portal like cave is filled with intense vapors and gases that instantly killed any animal entering into it. Birds that flew near it would perish immediately. Archaeologists said they were able to pinpoint the location by reconstructing the route of thermal springs. They also found a cave with columns on which there were inscriptions with dedications to the gods of the underworld. Francesco D’Andria, the leader of the archaeological team, said that in the ancient times people could watch rites from the steps, but only priests could go near the portal. The site remained functional until the 4th century A.D., and historians believe the site was destroyed by Christians in the 6th century along with several earthquakes.
