Elite Eight Wrap Up/Final Four Preview

The 2013 NCAA men’s basketball Elite Eight wrapped up over the weekend with three of the four games technically being upsets. Syracuse as the 4 seed took on Marquette as the 3 seed. Although they were the lower seed, many were not surprised that Syracuse played as well as they did. After knocking off Indiana in the Sweet 16, the Orange’s stifling zone defense held Marquette to just 39 points on its way to a blowout victory. Syracuse advanced to the Final Four for the first time since they won it all in 2003. Standing in their way will be fellow 4 seed Michigan. The Wolverines absolutely dominated Florida on its way to a 20 point blowout to reach their first Final Four since 1993. I think this will be one heck of a matchup in Atlanta. These are two teams that took out the respective 1 seeds in their region and are both playing great basketball right now. I will be very interested to see how Trey Burke and company handle Syracuse’s defense. This is a hard game to call, but I like Michigan to advance to the championship game.

On the other half of the bracket, we had Ohio State taking on surprise team Wichita State. The Shockers showed no fear however, and got up by as much as 20 in the 2nd half before Ohio State cut it to three. Wichita State did close it out and shocked the Buckeyes, becoming the first Missouri Valley Conference team to reach the Final Four since Larry Bird and Indiana State in 1979. They will certainly be tested in Atlanta however, as they take on number one overall seed Louisville. Louisville and Duke played a close game into the second half, but Peyton Siva and Cardinals went on a huge run to close out the game and reach the Final Four for the second straight season. I think Louisville will have no problem ending Wichita State’s cinderella season.
