History was made today in the NCAA tournament as the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles became the first 15 seed in the history of the NCAA tournament to reach the Sweet 16. After knocking off second seeded Georgetown, FGCU’s latest win came at the expense of #7 San Diego State University. The game was close in the second half, but the Eagles ripped off a 17-0 run and pulled away for the 10 point victory. The team that has come to be known as “Dunk City” has impressed people everywhere with their loose, high flying style of play. Next up is an instate showdown with #3 Florida. I think this will be a high scoring affair, and although FGCU will put up a fight, I think Florida will ultimately put an end to Cindarella’s season.
Of course, there were some other games on today to close out the third round. Ohio State’s Aaron Craft hit a 3 pointer with 0.5 seconds left to break a tie with Iowa State and avoid even more madness in the West Region. With the highest remaining seed being #6 Arizona, I think OSU will be able to come out of the West and reach the Final Four. Indiana also survived a scare from #9 Temple, but a late 3 pointer from Victor Oladipo clinched it. They will advance to face Syracuse, who I believe has a real shot at winning this game and advancing to the Elite Eight. Kansas overcame a rough first half to defeat its former coach for the third time, and La Salle scored with seconds remaining to upset Marshall Henderson and Ole Miss. I like Witchita State to take care of business against La Salle in the Sweet 16.
