Reaction to March Madness Second Round Day 2

The second half of round 2 came and went yesterday, and there was plenty of action and excitement. A pair of one seeds were in action looking to continue their undefeated streak against 16 seeds. Indiana turned in a strong performance against James Madison, looking like the favorite in the region. However, #1 Kansas had a tough time with Western Kentucky. After trailing by one point at halftime, the Jayhawks managed to pull out a 7 point win, the smallest for a 1 seed over a 16 seed since Gonzaga’s 6 point win yesterday. I still like Kansas in this region because I think this game was uncharacteristic for them and their defense along with tournament experience will help them along the way. This was no doubt a concerning game for them however, and coach Bill Self will make sure they are better prepared for the third round.

All four 2 seeds were in action yesterday, and while three of them cruised to easy wins, one did not survive. After a close first half, Florida Gulf Coast took over in the second half and knocked off #2 Georgetown for the upset of the day. It was the 7th time in tournament history a 15 seed has knocked off a 2 seed, and has happened 3 times in the last two years. Georgetown has now been knocked out by a double-digit seed in the tournament five straight years. FGCU has a legitimate shot at the sweet 16 as they take on San Diego State in the third round. The other upset of the day was #13 Lasalle over #4 Kansas State. Lasalle dominated the first half and led by 18 at halftime. K-State fought back in the second half but the deficit was ultimately too much to overcome and they fell by two. Lasalle will advance to the third round to take on Marshall Henderson and Ole Miss, which upset #5 Wisconsin after a strong second half performance by Henderson. I like Ole Miss to advance in this game, they are carrying over the momentum from their SEC championship and now their second round upset against Wisconsin and Lasalle will have a tough time guarding Marshall Henderson.
