Reaction to March Madness Second Round Day 1

The round of 64 kicked off at noon today with 16 games on the slot. There were some games that went as expected, some that came down to the wire, and some unexpected upsets. Michigan State kicked it off by easily handling Valparaiso and looking like a team with Final Four potential. Pittsburgh’s tournament woes continued as the eighth seeded Panthers suffered a double-digit loss to the Witchita State Shockers. Saint Louis was impressive in its win and looked like a team that could give Louisville some problems in the Sweet 16.

The blowout of the day goes to VCU, which put down a beating on #12 Akron 88-42. Shaka Smart’s team asserted its dominance and a potential rematch of the 2011 Elite 8 with Kansas could be very interesting if both teams advance to the Sweet 16. Two number one seeds played today, and while they both won only one of them did so easily. Louisville took care of business against NC A & T, but Gonzaga survived a major scare against Southern. Gonzaga’s lead was cut to just one point with 2 minutes remaining before finally pulling away. A third round matchup with Witchita State will be no easy contest.

Upsets of the day are brought to you by the Pac 12. Ironically it was two 12 seeds that got the job done. Oregon, which was underseeded to begin with, took care of Oklahoma State relatively easily while California knocked off UNLV in a three-point contest. Third seeded Marquette was nearly upset by Davidson but came from 4 points down with just 20 seconds left to squeak out a one point victory. Butler will be a tough matchup for them in the third round. The upset of the day goes to 14 seed Harvard, which got its first ever tournament win by knocking off New Mexico. This could be the upset of the second round, definitely not something that most people thought could happen.
