Today was a historical day in the Catholic Church as the Cardinals were able to select their new pope. Thousands stood in the rain, anxiously awaiting the puff of white smoke to signify that an agreement on a new pope had been reached. Cheers rang in the streets when the decision was finally made, and Jorge Mario Bergoglio was introduced as the first South American pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
Bergoglio, 76, is from Argentina and will be called Pope Francis. In selecting Francis, the cardinals sent a message that the future of the Catholic Church now lies in the South, where the bulk of Catholics reside. The new pope thanked all those who stood outside to cheer, and asked the audience to pray for him as he undertakes his new role.
