Movie Review: The Grey (2011)

the grey

This movie is about a huntsman (Liam Neeson) who is involved in a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. He, along with six others who survived, must find a way to stay alive and get back to safety. However, they must battle the brutal winter weather and a pack of killer wolves along the way.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the plot to this movie. Although there have been other movies about plane crashes and survival, this one in particular was suspenseful throughout the entire movie and always had you on the edge of your seat. Liam Neeson did a fantastic job acting, and the movie did a good job at portraying the emotions of the survivors either through confrontations with each other or flashbacks of their loved ones. I also thought it was neat that they collected the wallets of those who didn’t survive in order to return them to their family.

What I didn’t like

It was somewhat frustrating at times during the night scenes to tell what was going on because it was always really dark. I would have also liked to know exactly why the plane did crash in the beginning, as well as the full story behind the woman who Liam Neeson kept flashing back to. I also thought the ending was rather abrupt, and left some questions still to be answered.

This movie received a 6.8/10 on IMDB, a 79% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with a 62% from the audience.

Overall, I thought this was a very good movie. It was an epic survival tale that was suspenseful throughout and always kept you guessing as to what was going to happen next. I give this movie a final rating of 4/5.

  1. I thought this movie was intense and like all survival movies, it really made you think how you would survive in similar circumstances. The directing/filming was interesting. During the wolf attracts you never saw too many of the gory details but you could hear them which I think was almost more intense than seeing them. I agree that they could have revealed a bit more information in the flashbacks but overall I like the movie.
