Private Company Aims to Send 2 People to Mars in 2018

Ever thought you would live to see humans on Mars? Well one company has the hopes that this could happen as soon as 2018, just five years from now. Taber MacCallum, CEO of Paragon Space Development Corporation, and millionaire Dennis Tito announced their plans today. The proposal involves a 501 day trip in a spacecraft that includes flying by Mars but not actually landing on it. The goal is to accomplish this feat with two passengers in the spacecraft by the year 2018.

The organization that is leading effort behind the Mars mission is the Inspiration Mars Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Tito. Tito was a one time NASA engineer and flew to the International Space Station in 2001. The goal is for the mission to cost under $1 billion. MacCallum has said this is a philanthropic effort, and they will not be asking NASA for any funding.

There will certainly be many obstacles and challenges to go through in order to pull off this mission, but the fact that it is even being proposed as a possibility is amazing. Humans have been fascinated with Mars ever since it was discovered that there was the possibility that life once existed there. I think it would be amazing if they could pull this off and look forward to seeing how it progresses.

Let me know what you guys think about this mission in the comments down below. Like the post, share with your friends, and follow the blog.

Thanks,

Jeff

One Response to Private Company Aims to Send 2 People to Mars in 2018

  1. John Pierro says:

That’s a pretty crazy project and will be fun to watch. Another impressive venture is Virgin Galactic’s space tourism business. Rather than the 500 days it will take to get to Mars and back you can book a 2.5 hour flight into space, and they plan to launch their first flight this year! While the cost is still a bit prohibitive for most ($200,000), in time prices will probably come down to Earth, 🙂 Who knows, I could be looking for something interesting to do in my retirement.
