The NHL has proposed a new realignment plan that would consist of four divisions instead of six and also add wild cards to the playoffs. There would be two divisions in each conference, and the division winner with the most points would play the lowest seeded wild card and the other division winner would play the other wild card in both the Eastern and Western Conference. The plan still needs to be approved by the NHL Players Association and Board of Governors.
Under the new system, the Eastern Conference will feature the Atlantica and Central divisions, while the Western Conference will have the MidWest and Pacific divisions. The teams in each division can be seen in the graphic above, from left to right: Atlantic, Central, MidWest, Pacific. The NHL has already tried realignment once back in December 2011, but it did not go through. It will be interesting to see how it works out if the new realignment ultimately gets approved.
