The San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2013 second round pick and a conditional mid-round pick in the 2014 draft. Smith is expected to play under his current contract as of now, which guarantees him $8.5 million for this upcoming season. The Chiefs are also expected to get rid of quarterback Matt Cassell, who was traded from the Patriots to the Chiefs in 2009 but failed to live up to his 6 year $63 million contract.
Smith lost his job late in the season when, after being benched due to a concussion, backup QB Colin Kaepernick torched the Chicago Bears defense on Monday Night Football. After the game, Jim Harbaugh said the 49ers were going with the “hot hand” at quarterback, which meant Kaepernick would be starting the rest of the way. Smith had been one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL the last two seasons, including nearly leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl berth last year. Kaepernick was able to make it one game farther but ultimately fell short in Super Bowl XLVII.
To be honest, this trade surprised me a little bit at first. I thought that the Chiefs were going to use the #1 pick in the draft to get a solid young quarterback and start fresh, while Alex Smith would go to a team like the Jets or Cardinals. However, the move does make some sense. Alex Smith can provide some veteran leadership on a team that did have 6 pro bowlers last year, and will be teaming up with a veteran coach in Andy Reid. The Chiefs can now use their high draft picks to build around Alex Smith and bring in some other young talent. I expect the Chiefs to be much better this year.
