Recapping the Insanity of the College Basketball Season So Far

nd louisville

That picture you see above you is just the latest installment in what has been a completely insane college basketball season so far. Last night #25 Notre Dame defeated #11 Louisville in an epic 5 overtime thriller. Although perhaps the most exciting game to date, there has been no shortage of headlines and exciting games throughout the season so far. Here is a quick recap.

Indiana began the season as the number one team in the country after bringing back star players Cody Zeller and Christian Watford from last year’s elite 8 team. The defending champion Kentucky Wildcats began the season at #3 despite introducing a brand new lineup of mostly freshman from the year before. After losing to #9 Duke early in the season, Kentucky quickly began its descent out of the top 25. Butler, back to back finalists in the NCAA tournament in 2010 and 2011, has been playing really well. They upset #9 North Carolina in November before knocking off #1 Indiana in December.

On January 12th, #20 North Carolina State defeated #1 Duke 84-76, and since then being ranked number one has not been a safe place to be. A day later #15 Ohio State upset #2 Michigan, two days after that Wisconsin took down #2 Indiana, and four days after that #6 Syracuse upset #1 Louisville. After Duke returned to number one the following week, they were promptly blown out by #25 Miami (FL), who remained undefeated in the ACC and are having their best season ever.

Now it was Michigan’s turn to take control of number one. Unfortunately they had #3 Indiana waiting for them and lost 81-73 on February 2nd. That same day 8 additional ranked teams lost as well. After returning to #1, Indiana traveled to Illinois and lost a heartbreaking 74-72 game on an inbounds play with 0.9 seconds left, marking the fifth straight week that the number one team has lost. During that stretch, Kansas is on its first 3 game losing streak since 2005.

Oh, and Bryant University is also leading the nation in pure win turnaround and sits in first place in the Northeast Conference.

So the moral of the season so far: anything can happen. All signs are pointing toward a fantastic March Madness this year.
