This movie follows the struggles and challenges that Abraham Lincoln went through during his time as President of the United States. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as President Lincoln as he tries to end the Civil War while also battling his own cabinet to support his attempt to get the 13th amendment passed in Congress, and therefore emancipate the slaves. The movie also portrays the personal side of Lincoln by showing how Lincoln coped with his wife and kids throughout the stressful conflicts.
What I liked
I thought Daniel Day-Lewis nailed the part of Abraham Lincoln throughout this entire movie. I enjoyed seeing both sides of Lincoln throughout this movie: his passion in trying to get enough support for the amendment, and also his passion in trying to do what is best for his family. The film did a good job of detailing the stress that Lincoln was going through towards the end of the Civil War, and how that affected him and his family. Overall, it was really cool seeing a historical figure that I’ve read about for years in school being brought to life in movie form, as opposed to a textbook or documentary.
What I didn’t like
At times, I thought the movie was a little slow and boring. There were parts that had long conversations and not enough action. I felt like some of those parts could have been cut out of this movie without taking away from the overall plot, especially considering the movie is two and a half hours long.
IMDB gave this movie a rating of 8/10, while rotten tomatoes rated it at 91% from the critics and 87% from the audience.
Overall, I would have to say the movie was very well done. You can definitely see the time and effort that went into a film like this, and it was very interesting to watch the portrayal of such an important man at such a critical point in our country’s history. The movie was a little long and boring at times, but for the most part did a fantastic job at chronicling the trials and tributes of America’s 16th president. This movie earns a 4/5 from me.
