This past Friday, I watched the movie The Campaign. The Campagin is about two candidates running for Congress in North Carolina. Cam Brady (Will Ferell) is seeking a fifth consecutive term, but when he makes an inappropriate phone call to one of his supporters, the public looks for someone to run against him. Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis) decides to give it a shot. The remainder of this movie is filled with comedy making fun of the political campaign process, as well as a happy ending.
What I liked
There were definitely parts of this movie that were generally funny in making fun of the political campaign process. I thought Will Ferell did a pretty good as well. One of my favorite parts was during the first debate where they were both asked a simple, straightforward question, and both of them completely beat around the bush (which is exactly what happens in real politics). I also liked when the candidates got into a fight twice, and Will Ferell ended up punching both a baby and a dog in the fights. It was realistic how the two wealthy CEOs were trying to buy the election to help their own cause. Although unrealistic, I enjoyed the ending where Will Ferell relinquishes his position to Zach Galifianakis because he decided to be honest. If only that could happen a little more in real life, who knows where America would be.
What I didn’t like
At some points in the movie, the characters tried too hard to be funny. There could have been a little less swearing and sex jokes, and still be a good comedy. I also think this movie might have exaggerated a little more than was necessary. The scene where Marty Huggins gets Cam Brady’s son to call him dad, and the scene where Cam Brady sleeps with Marty Huggin’s wife and runs it as a campaign advertisement, were a little over the top.
This movie received a 6.2/10 on IMDB and a 66% from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie definitely did a good job in making fun of the political campaign process. However, there were certain parts that were either a little over the top or just unnecessary. Overall, I give this movie a 3/5.
