Zero Dark Thirty is a film based on the true story of the decade long man hunt for Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden following the attacks of 9/11. The movie was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and stars Jessica Chastain as CIA officer Maya, Joel Edgerton as the Squadron team leader, and Chris Pratt as a member of Seal Team 6. The term Zero Dark Thirty refers to half past midnight, as well as the dark cloud surrounding the manhunt in the years following 9/11.
What I liked:
I thought Jessica Chastain did an excellent job in her role as Maya throughout the film. You could really get a sense of the stress and determination that she was going through during this mission. I liked how the movie opens with just the audio from 9/11, and proceeds to show us everything that led up to the final mission in order to give us an idea of what an impressive feat it really was. The ending was my favorite part of the movie. You get to see all the hard work and effort put into this mission culminate with the successful invasion of Bin Laden’s house in Pakistan, and the subsequent killing of Bin Laden. I found it interesting that Bin Laden’s face in the movie was never fully shown.
What I didn’t like:
Although the historical events leading up to the final mission were important, I felt at times that the movie was moving too slowly and dragged on a bit. It was also very confusing to try to follow everything that was going on during the middle part of the movie. This is a movie that you may need to see twice to catch all the details and understand what is happening. The only other thing that might have taken something away from this movie is the historical accuracy. The movie is based on real events but I will never know how close it is to the actual thing.
IMDB gives this movie a 7.7/10 rating while the critics at Rotten Tomatoes give it a 93%. Personally, I thought the movie was done really well for the most part. It accomplished the goal of giving Americans an idea of all the rigorous efforts to catch Bin Laden and of what happened the night he was killed. It may have been a little slow and confusing at times, but overall I thought it was a pretty good movie so I will give it a 4/5.
